The GT7 Community is Tired of Waiting – Polyphony Digital Needs to Act

Gran Turismo 7 (GT7) was expected to be the pinnacle of racing simulation when it launched in 2022, but more than two years later, many fans feel let down by the direction of the game’s updates. Despite a steady stream of new cars and tracks, players argue that Polyphony Digital has failed to address core issues, leaving the game stagnant and frustrating for long-time enthusiasts.

Early Backlash Over Microtransactions

One of the first controversies surrounding GT7 came shortly after launch when a patch significantly reduced in-game payouts for races. This made it harder for players to purchase high-end cars without either grinding for hours or resorting to microtransactions. The backlash was swift, with the game’s Metacritic user score dropping to an abysmal 2.0—one of the lowest ever for a PlayStation exclusive. While Polyphony later adjusted the economy to ease the grind, many players felt the damage was already done.

Updates That Add Content but Not Substance

Polyphony Digital has continued to roll out free monthly updates, usually featuring a handful of new cars and, occasionally, a new track. On the surface, this seems like a positive move, but critics argue that these additions do little to enhance the overall experience. Many of the new vehicles are priced so high that they remain out of reach for most players unless they dedicate significant time to grinding. Worse, there’s a lack of meaningful events designed to showcase these new additions, making them feel like hollow content drops rather than exciting expansions.

Core Gameplay Issues Remain Unresolved

Beyond concerns over content, many players are frustrated by the game’s unbalanced economy and limited opportunities to earn credits. Although Polyphony has introduced features like online time trials with high payouts, these are seen as temporary band-aids rather than long-term fixes. Players also lament the lack of engaging single-player content, with many of the same race events still dominating the lineup years after launch.

Technical Problems Add to the Frustration

On top of content and economy concerns, technical issues have also plagued GT7. For instance, the 1.49 update in mid-2024 introduced a physics bug that caused cars to behave erratically—sometimes launching into the air or bouncing uncontrollably. Issues like these have led players to question Polyphony’s quality control, adding to the sense that the game isn’t being managed with the care and polish expected of a flagship PlayStation title.

The Future of Gran Turismo 7

Despite continued support from Polyphony Digital, the general sentiment among the GT7 community remains one of disappointment. While the developers have shown a willingness to tweak certain aspects of the game, their reluctance to make sweeping changes to the economy, single-player experience, and event structure has left many players feeling ignored.

With the Gran Turismo franchise being one of Sony’s most iconic series, fans are hopeful that future updates—or perhaps a new installment—will address these lingering issues. Until then, the road ahead for Gran Turismo 7 remains bumpy.
